Soya Bean Outgrowers Alliance

A United Refineries Initiative

The United Refineries Limited Soya bean Outgrower Alliance (SOBOA) is an initiative to partner with farmers in a bid to improve the availability of raw material for the plant. URL has an annual processing capacity of 72,000Metric Tonnes of soya. SOBOA through its partnership with value chain stakeholders provides support to farmers which includes soil sampling, tillage services, seed, fertilizer, chemicals and harvesting services. The support provided is a loan which is repaid in tonnage of soya beans. It is calculated by dividing the total amount provided by the agreed soya bean price per metric tonne.

Requirements for admission

  • A minimum of 10 hectares
  • Functional irrigation – centre pivot or over-head sprinklers
  • Basic farm machinery – tractor and implements
  • Security for loan – this can be negotiated on a farmer by farmer basis
  • Documented experience in growing soya beans
  • No outstanding loan with any financial institution or contractor
  • Pass a vetting exercise

    Maize Contract Farming

    A United Refineries Initiative
    • UR Agriventures Maize Contract Farming is a partnership program between United Refineries Limited (URL) and maize farmers.
    • The program is designed to improve the availability of raw material for URL's maize processing plant, which has an annual capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes.
    • UR Agriventures provides support to farmers in the form of soil sampling, tillage services, seeds, fertilizers, chemicals, and harvesting services. This support is provided as a loan to be repaid in maize tonnage.
    • Farmers benefit from discounted prices for inputs and services due to economies of scale.
